kde depends upon hardware dependent packages (e.g. hal),
and upon packages dealing with the kernel somehow (e.g.
udev), even if the system is a container or a chroot and
does not provide access to hardware or kernel.

To support container installations like LXC or Vserver it
would be very nice if these dependencies could be modified.
This would be _extremely_ helpful for virtual desktop
installations.

Many thanx

Harri

Fast forward few years later: hal is dead, we have upower and udisks2,
using udev. Also, the container technologies evolved a lot in the
latest years, so I'd expect improvements on this front as well.

The problem I see with this bug report is that it is way too generic
to be actionable. There is no description of any actual problem that
impacts the reported use case, and thus it is hard to do any change.
The dependencies we have are set usually because a certain software
is either broken or most likely useless without them, so before
changing them we need to see actual problems "in action", and what are
their associated use cases.

My recommendation is thus to provide the problem descriptions in user
support channels, so it can be better discussed in a more generic way,
and/or open specific bug reports describing the actual specific issues
found.

Because of what I said above, I'm thus closing this generic bug report.

Thank you anyway for this bug report,
