The network seems to be more stable, but I still have connection timeouts. There are no more dmesg lines for "eth0: link up" but my ssh connection still terminates from time to time. Do you need any more log files ? Gerd.

Ping. Yes, yes we do need log files from the kernel you are currently using. If the latest squeeze kernel still reproduces this, please try a 3.y kernel from unstable, so we can work on this upstream (or if it's fixed in sid, so we can start looking for the fix). The only packages aside from outside squeeze aside from linux-image-foo itself that should be need in order to do so are initramfs-tools and linux-base. Thanks much, Jonathan

I'd like to see this fixed in the upstream 3.0.y longterm branch, since it should make it easier to share work on maintaining 3.2.y. It would also be useful to fix this in squeeze; conveniently enough, the current r8169 driver in squeeze is based on the version in v3.0.2. If you have time for it, please test the fix on top of the 3.0.y branch. It works like this: 1. If you still have a clone of Linus's kernel repository: # enter it cd linux # grab the stable and longterm branches on top git remote add -f stable \ git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git Otherwise: # grab a copy of the stable and longterm branches git clone -o stable \ git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git \ linux # enter it cd linux 2. git checkout -f stable/linux-3.0.y git am -3 $HOME/downloads/0001-r8169-Rx-FIFO-overflow-fixes.patch make localmodconfig; # minimal configuration # or: make silentoldconfig; # reuse configuration make deb-pkg; # pass -j<number of processors> for parallel build dpkg -i ../<name of package> reboot As always, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thanks again for your work on this. Sincerely, Jonathan

What kernel do you use these days? Have you tried 3.2.y from sid/experimental? Would you be interested in pursuing a fix in 2.6.32.y or 3.0.y? Jonathan

Backporting the fix to 3.0.y is straightforward; I haven't tried 2.6.32.y yet. Followed up upstream --- it would be best if we can do this with François's cooperation, since as maintainer he is less likely to miss something important.

A backport to 3.0.y is good enough for Debian's purposes since squeeze now has r8169 from 3.0.2. It would be good to have a fix in 2.6.32.y longterm as well, but that's not something we need to be directly concerned about. Ben. -- Ben Hutchings If at first you don't succeed, you're doing about average.

Ben Hutchings wrote: > A backport to 3.0.y is good enough for Debian's purposes since squeeze > now has r8169 from 3.0.2. Oh! Thanks for the hint. Here's a rough backport of the patch to Greg's linux-3.0.y branch and split into 4 pieces, with an explanation involving some guesswork for each. I suspect the combination will work, but I easily could have misunderstood some of the patches, so at least some details of the explanations are probably wrong. I would be particularly interested to hear if the patches seem sane and work and if the effect of patch 4/4 is noticeable. The patches seem to apply to Debian squeeze without trouble, too, in case that's easier to test. Thoughts of all kinds welcome, as always. r8169: ignore masked events in the irq handler r8169: mask RxFIFOOver interruption for 8168c, 8105e, and newer chips r8169: remove now-redundant case statements in rtl8169_interrupt r8169: use event mask when disabling interrupts drivers/net/r8169.c | 54 ++++++++++++++++++++++---------------------------- 1 files changed, 24 insertions(+), 30 deletions(-)

It's part of the "no processing" policy: the driver only acks what it cares about. -- Ueimor

While you're here, a few more questions. ;-) No more after these, I promise. - Is the PCI commit after writing to IntrStatus needed in the context of 3.0.y which does not have 92fc43b4159b ("r8169: modify the flow of the hw reset") but does call irq_mask_and_ack from time to time without a PCI commit immediately afterward? What symptoms does it address? - Does init_one need the same "don't ack uninteresting events" change (0xffff -> tp->intr_event)? - Am I understanding correctly that patch 3/4 (remove now-redundant case statements) is a code cleanup / no-op? Thanks very much for your help. Jonathan

Hi, Gerd, Lucas, can you test the attached patch? It works like this: # prerequisites apt-get install git build-essential kernelrepos=git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ # get the Linux kernel if you don't already have it git clone $kernelrepos/torvalds/linux.git # enter Linux kernel repository cd linux # fetch point releases git remote add -f stable $kernelrepos/stable/linux-stable.git # try 3.0.y git reset --hard git checkout stable/linux-3.0.y make localmodconfig make deb-pkg; # optionally with -j<num> for parallel build dpkg -i ../<name of package> reboot ... test test test ...; # hopefully it gives hangs or transmit timeouts # test with patch git am -3sc thepatch make deb-pkg; # maybe with -j4 dpkg -i ../<name of package> reboot ... test test test ... Results from testing the squeeze kernel following instructions from [1] would also be interesting. Thanks to Sioçnarf for hints. Hopeful, Jonathan [1] http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html or the corresponding page in the debian-kernel-handbook package

One can only say that the write will be committed somewhere between the time it is requested and the next MMIO read for this register range. > - Does init_one need the same "don't ack uninteresting events" change > (0xffff -> tp->intr_event)? No. Init is different. It happens once and the driver is only in control afterwards. > - Am I understanding correctly that patch 3/4 (remove now-redundant > case statements) is a code cleanup / no-op? Yes. -- Ueimor
